Christ’s Passion

Lenten season artwork showing crucifixion cross for Ash Wednesday, Holy Week and Easter services Fort Collins

Jesus’ Passion is about intense love, the love He feels for you and for all people. We all need Jesus. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” the Bible tells us in Romans 3:23. Remarkably, the Bible also says Jesus was “delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification” (Romans 4:25). Your sins have been paid for by Jesus. You have been declared “not guilty” by God because of Jesus. Believe it and it’s yours.

The 40 days leading up to Easter are called Lent. This is a time to pause, to reflect and to be sorry for our sins as we look forward to the joy of Easter morning, when Jesus Christ rose from the dead as victor over sin, death and the devil. This is the remedy for our lives filled with sins and disappointments, hurts and bad consciences. In Jesus there is forgiveness and peace – every day is a new beginning. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

We invite you to join us at Peace With Christ this Lent. Come hear Jesus’ own forgiving words spoken directly to you and learn more about Christ’s Passion. Bring your questions, your concerns and your worries, and lay them at the feet of the God who loves you so much that He sent His Son to suffer, die and rise again for you. You’ll find many kindred spirits, sinners all, forgiven.

What is LenT About?

No one takes [my life] from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father. (John 10:18, NIV)

We Preach Christ Crucified | Peace With Christ Lutheran Church Fort Collins

Early in the Church’s history, the major events in Christ’s life were observed with special observances, such as His birth, baptism, death, resurrection and ascension. As these observances developed, a period of time was set aside prior to the major events of Jesus’ birth and resurrection as a time of preparation.

During Lent, the Church’s worship assumes a more penitential character. The color for the season is purple, a color often associated with penitence. The “Hymn of Praise” is omitted from the liturgy. The word “Alleluia” is usually omitted as well. By not using the alleluia – a joyful expression meaning “Praise the Lord” – until Easter, the Lenten season is clearly set apart as a distinct time from the rest of the year. Additionally, it forms a powerful contrast with the festive celebration of Jesus’ resurrection when our alleluias ring loud and clear.

The penitential character of Lent is not its sole purpose, however. In the ancient Church, the weeks leading up to Easter were a time of intensive preparation of the candidates who were to be baptized at the Easter vigil on Holy Saturday. This time in the Church’s calendar was also seen as an especially appropriate time for Baptism because of the relationship between Christ’s death and resurrection and our own in Holy Baptism (see Rom. 6:1-11). This focus would suggest that the season of Lent serves not only as a time to meditate on the suffering that Christ endured on our behalf but also as an opportunity to reflect upon our own Baptism and what it means to live as a child of God.

What to Expect

Front doors at Peace With Christ Lutheran Church in Fort Collins, CO

You can expect a warm welcome, reverent and relevant worship, and Christ-focused, biblical teaching at Peace With Christ Lutheran Church.

You will arrive at Peace With Christ in our narthex – a room outside of our worship area (sanctuary). Our worship services are held in the sanctuary and our fellowship and education events are held in the fellowship hall.

If you are here for a worship service, an usher will hand you a bulletin, and you can find a seat in whatever pew you like. Our pastor will also often greet you before the service.

Our worship services are about an hour long. You will find them to be reverent but also relevant to our greatest struggles.

I’ve never been to church before. How does this work? Do I make a reservation? Do I just show up?

You can just show up! There is no need to make a reservation or to call beforehand. We have space for you, and we often have people just show up.

However, if you feel more comfortable if you talked with us before arriving, please reach out to our office at (970) 226-4721.

Even if you don’t talk with us before coming, you are welcome at Peace With Christ.

Where do I sit?

We have long, cushioned benches with backs on them called pews.

You are welcome to sit in any pew you prefer. On some Sundays, we may have a few pews in the front reserved for groups observing a special occasion like a baptism.

What is worship like?

Worship consists of readings from our holy book called the Bible, an explanation of those readings (sermon), prayers, and singing. At most of our worship services, the congregation confesses its wrongdoings (sin) and receives forgiveness. We also observe a small, ritual meal called Holy Communion at most of our services. At some of our worship services, an individual may receive a ritual application of water called Holy Baptism.

Our worship services follow an ancient and set pattern. We call this the “Liturgy.” You will find that our worship services are reverent. We believe that God comes to us at worship – that’s a holy thing, so we treat it that way.

Even though our worship services are reverent, you will find that they are also not “stuffy” or irrelevant. Worship is heartfelt and can even be surprising.

Worship services are led by an organ.

Do I have to participate?

You are welcome to participate in the worship service to the extent that you feel comfortable. You do not need to sing any hymns or speak the creed or any other responses.

In general, it is polite to stand when the rest of the congregation stands and to sit when they sit, if you are able. However, if you are unable to stand or feel uncomfortable standing for the portions of the worship service when we stand, you are free to remain seated.

If you are not a communicant member of a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregation, we ask that you speak with the pastor before receiving communion at our altar. We make this request out of love for you and your spiritual well-being.

If you are unable to receive communion at our altar, simply remain seated during the communion distribution.

Will I be identified as a visitor?

We will not call special attention to you as a visitor. You will not be asked to stand up or introduce yourself.

Does it cost money?

There is no cost to attend our worship services.

We have an offering box at the entrance into the narthex. If you wish to contribute to our ministry, you may leave a contribution there but this is not expected or required.

Can I take communion?

We welcome communicant members of sister congregations in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) to receive communion at our altar.

If you are not a communicant member of an LCMS congregation, we ask that you speak with the pastor before receiving communion. We make this request out of love for you and your spiritual well-being.

If you are unable to receive communion at our altar, simply remain seated during the communion distribution.

How do I dress?

There’s no dress code at Peace With Christ. Some people prefer jeans and casual attire, while others choose to wear suits or dresses. We care about your presence, not your clothing.

Are children welcome?

Yes! Peace With Christ welcomes children. We have many child-focused programs like Sunday School, Catechism Class, and Youth Group.

Children are always welcome in worship at Peace With Christ. We want our children to worship with us, so they can hear the Word of God and learn the life of faith.

We understand that children can be restless and noisy. That’s okay! If you feel like you need to step outside to calm your child, however, you can take them into the area outside of our worship area or our nursery. You can still hear the service in both locations.

Where do I park?

Peace With Christ has an onsite parking lot. Handicapped parking is available.

Are there restrooms?

We have a men’s and women’s restroom (with changing tables in both) in the hallway between the kitchen and the fellowship hall.
